The Arrow of Frustration
The distance between what you imagined and what you got is where you live.
The centre column is empty — no 6, no 5, no 4. Imagination, feeling and practical action have no line joining them, so what you can picture and what you can execute stay permanently out of reach of each other. This is the most quietly painful arrow on the lattice.
The spine of the lattice, unoccupied — the inverse of Will. Imagination at 6, the heart at 5 and capable hands at 4 all stand empty, so the vision and the means never meet in the middle. Note what this is not: it is not a failure of either end. You can picture it accurately and you could probably build it. There is simply no centre for the two to meet in.
It shows up as a permanent, low-grade discrepancy between the version in your head and the version in the world — in work, in your home, in how a conversation was supposed to go. Nobody else sees the gap, because they only ever see the finished thing. You are comparing it to something they cannot see, and losing.
It compounds the more capable you become. Skill raises the ceiling of what you can picture at least as fast as what you can execute, so the distance does not close with competence — for many people it widens. This is why the instruction below is to shrink the plan rather than grow yourself: the far end is the only end that moves.
What to do about it
Shrink the gap from the far end. Make the plan smaller rather than making yourself bigger. A finished small thing repairs this; a magnificent unstarted one feeds it.
