AN ARROW OF WEAKNESS

The Arrow of Passivity

You wait. You have always waited. Something was supposed to begin by now.

The right column is empty — no 7, no 8, no 9. Experience, independence and ambition are all unoccupied, so nothing in the lattice generates motion by itself. Things happen to you far more often than you cause them.

The outer edge on the acting side, unoccupied — the inverse of Activity. Ambition at 9, self-sufficiency at 8 and experience at 7 have no cells, so the lattice has no self-starting circuit. Motion is not impossible; it just has to be supplied from outside, by a deadline, a person, or a situation that has already gone wrong.

It shows up as a life shaped largely by what arrived. The job you were offered, the city someone else moved to, the relationship that formed around you. Each of those was a real choice and you would defend every one of them — but look at the sequence and notice how few of them began with you.

It is the arrow most likely to be mistaken for contentment, including by the person carrying it. Waiting is comfortable, it is rarely punished, and it produces no crisis. The bill arrives late and all at once, usually as the recognition that a decade passed in which nothing was initiated — and that recognition is the beginning of the correction, not a reason for despair.

What to do about it

Initiate one thing a week that nobody asked you for. Size is irrelevant. This arrow is not corrected by feeling more motivated; it is corrected by acting before you feel it.

Which cells it runs through

It crosses all three planes, so this arrow describes a circuit — something travelling from thought to feeling to action, or failing to.

  • 9ambition and ideals · mental planeScale — the principle behind the thing, and the wish to see it done properly.
  • 8self-sufficiency · soul planeIndependence, judgement, and knowing what a thing is really worth.
  • 7learning by cost · physical planeKnowledge that arrived through experience, usually expensive experience.

How common it is

The overall number describes almost nobody. Every 19xx date supplies a 1 and a 9, so some lines are near-universal for one generation and nearly impossible for another.

The same line, the other way

A line makes an arrow when all three cells are full, and a different arrow when all three are empty.

The Arrow of ActivityYou are always doing something, and you have never asked why.

You have read about it. Now have it read.

None of this is worth much in the abstract. Give the teacher the day you were born and he will tell you which of these you actually carry.
